How Long Does a Texas State Inspection Take?

The short answer

A Texas state inspection usually takes 15 to 30 minutes if your vehicle passes. Emissions counties add a few minutes for the OBD-II test. Failures add time for repairs, but you have 15 days for a free re-test at the same station.

Texas inspection timeline step by step

Check-in and proof of insurance takes a few minutes. The safety portion — brakes, lights, horn, wipers, mirrors, seat belts, tires, and steering — takes 10–15 minutes. In emissions counties, plugging in for the OBD-II test adds 5 minutes.

What causes inspection delays

An illuminated check engine light (automatic emissions failure), burned-out bulbs, worn wiper blades, cracked windshields in the driver's view, and bald tires are the most common failures we see.

Two Steps, One Sticker explained

Texas no longer issues a separate inspection sticker. Pass inspection first, then renew registration within 90 days — your registration sticker proves both.

Note: Texas lawmakers have changed safety inspection rules for non-commercial vehicles starting in 2025; emissions testing still applies in designated counties. Ask us what applies to your county.
